Designers put traditional Indian craft in the spotlight

NEW DELHI – Designers put traditional Indian craft into the spotlight on Thursday at the country’s biggest fashion event, which opened a day late after organisers failed to furnish mandatory fire safety permits.

All shows at the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week were cancelled on Wednesday and organisers scrambled to get all necessary clearances overnight.

Sunil Sethi, president of the Fashion Design Council of India which organises the fashion week, said one more day would be added to the five-day schedule to accommodate designers from the cancelled shows.

On Thursday, designer Tarun Tahiliani marked a return to traditional craft with hand-done Indian fabrics, embroidery and his signature draping.

The collection included sarongs, long-tailored coats and trademark sari drapes mostly in dull muted colours.

“I consciously used Indian fabric. I feel we’ve been a little too western,” Tahiliani said after his show.

Designer Kavita Bhartia showcased a collection dominated by black graphic prints with floral details and an abundance of hand-crafted embroideries and tie-and-dye silhouettes.

“I think it was important to take all the best India has to offer and present it in a modern way,” Bhartia said.

Pallavi Mohan drew inspiration from the mystical world of “Alice in Wonderland” for her rainbow line of evening gowns, tunics and shift dresses.

Around 130 designers are showcasing their Autumn/Winter 2010 collections at the fashion week, which will close on Monday.

Makeup tips from Carmindy

In her new book CRAZY BUSY BEAUTIFUL: Beauty Secrets for Getting Gorgeous Fast, Carmindy opens up her beauty treasure chest and sharing the hundreds of beauty tips and secrets she’s learned on the show and during her years as a makeup artistacross the globe. From creating perfect smoky eyes to a sneaky lip trick for glossing up your lips on the down-low, it’s chock-full of tips for daytime routines, nighttime glamour, travel, and every other time you want to look and feel beautiful in your crazy, busy life.

I’ve asked Carmindy if she’d be willing to share some makeup tips for Spring and since I always get emails asking me if I know which products she is using during episodes of What Not to Wear, I asked her to suggest from products from her makeup line:

*The hottest universal trend for spring is wearing a moist coral shade of lipstick. (Natural Beauty Inspired by Carmindy Color Comfort Lipcolor in Sunburst.)

*Another top spring trend is to line eyes with waterproof liners like Natural Beauty Inspired By Carmindy Forever Stay Eye Pencils in opposite colors from your iris to really make your eyes pop. For brown eyes use Indigo Blue, green eyes use Pure Plum, blue eyes use Chocolate Brown and hazel eyes use Jade.

*Apply bronzer this spring on 3 key places on the face for a modern way to bronze. Don’t bronze the entire face like in the past, but rather on the temples, along sides of the face and under the cheekbones for a more natural sun-kissed glow. (Natural Beauty Inspired By Carmindy Sunglow Powder Bronzer in Spring.)

Carmindy’s new book is now available on Amazon.com.

6 Hottest Hairstyle Trends for 2010

1. The Bob …

Precision cut bobs are huge this year, coupled with smooth, sleek styling, a blunt fringe and heaps of shine. Your bob should be carefully crafted to accentuate your unique facial structure, or highlight a long, beautiful neck.

Bob hair styles range from ear level to shoulder skimming and are best for straight or slightly wavy hair.Reese opted for a classic elegant bob.

And if you’re feeling a little more groovy… incorporate a mod feel into your bob, just like gorgeous Gwyneth Paltrow did!

2. Long and Wavy …

Long and wavy hair style is The Hair Style of 2009. Spring-Summer 09 fashion shows were full of tall stunners with gorgeous long wavy hair. And most importantly, this year the waves should look as natural as possible! Either with heavy layering, or some layers around the face, or even with the same lenght a-la-Demie-Moore style, the waves are rocking 2009.

Find a good hair stylist and listen to their ideas about styles and techniques that’ll work best on your hair, while complimenting your face.

Unexpected texture and length might differ and the angles can range from soft and gently sloping to an extreme plunge Along with the layers, asymmetrical bangs are hot, and whether they’re cut blunt or heavily textured, a sloping bang adds interest and can highlight your features nicely.

3. Classy Ponytails …

A Classy Ponytail is a major hair trend on Spring-Summer runways in New York, Parisand Milan.

Worn both high and low it looked absolutely stunning – it’s grace and elegance made it one of the hottest hair trends of this year.

4. Straight Traces …

Do you prefer straight hair? Well, I have fantastic news for you: classic straight traces are very “IT” this year!

Parted in the middle, this hair style looks even more fabulous!

5. Over the Top Updos …

There is hardly a sexier hair style than an updo, that opens your neck and adds extra 5 inches to your height. Luckily this hair trend is one of the hottest hair trends of 2010.

Worn with a gorgeous gown, a suit or a pair of jeans, it will instantly add more style nomatter what the occasion is. Just make sure your updo is really over the top, and looks like one of the hairstyles in the pictures below:

6. Color for Character …

Hair color can have a dramatic effect on an otherwise plain hair style. Rich naturalbrown colors are ultra-hot this year. Deep tones of chocolate or red tones are a greatcompliment to a dark brown or black hair color.

Natural colors of blonde and natural red are big as well. Strategically placed highlights, lowlights, or panels can accentuate texture and add tons of character to your style. Compliment your features and skin tone, and add an edge to your haircut with some artful hair coloring.

Beauty without cruelty – to yourself

It’s been revealed that half of women have cut back on spending on their make-up during the recession, with more than a third hanging on to their cosmetics for longer in order to make the pennies go further.

But the ugly truth is that we could be causing more problems than we’re solving, not least when it comes to the health of our eyes – 24 per cent of women have not purchased any eye make-up for more than six months and ten per cent for two years.

And almost one-in-five women share their eye make-up and skincare with their men – a habit frowned upon by eye experts who warn that sharing eye make-up can spread bacteria and increase the risk of eye infections.

So we asked the College of Optometrists experts for their advice on making sure our beauty routine keeps us as beautiful as possible.

Dr Susan Blakeney, optometric adviser, said: “Old, out-of-date make-up may harbour bacteria which can cause unpleasant and unsightly eye infections such as conjunctivitis and styes.”

Mascara - which should be discraded after six months of use - is the worst culprit as it’s water based and therefore a prime breeding ground for bacteria.

Germs collected on the mascara wand are then pushed down into the mascara itself where bacteria can breed and potentially infect the eyes next time mascara is applied.

It’s another reason why we should also avoid pumping the brush, which dries out the mascara as well as driving those germs down into the tube where it can thrive due to the wet environment.

Dr Blakeney recommends mascara and liquid eyeliner are thrown away six months after opening – you’ll see this symbol on the side of the packaging anyway, but remember it applies to the point from which it’s been opened, rather than bought.

Cream and water-based eyeshadows should be used between 12-18 months after opening.

“Water-based eye shadows have a much shorter shelf life than powder products because the liquid element is a good environment for bacteria,” says Dr Blakeney.

“To help maintain the life of your eye shadow, clean your brushes regularly to avoid a build up of dirt, oil and germs.”

We would add that extra care should be taken with organic products as they often don’t contain the synthetic preservatives that give ordinary products a little extra shelf life. But, again, there will be a symbol on the product reminding you of its lifespan.

The College of Optometrists recommends the following rules for safe make-up use and maintaining eye health:

• Don’t apply make-up on the move. Scratching the eye with a mascara wand is the most common injury from make-up and can lead to eye infections. To reduce the risk of scratches, only apply where there is no risk of sudden movement or jolts which could lead to injury.

• Don’t share your eye make-up. Sharing make-up can be risky as you may be sharing bacteria too. It’s particularly inadvisable to share mascara and eyeliner.

• Play it safe – ditch mascara after three-to-six months of use. Cosmetic brushes pick up bacteria from the skin. The risk of infection is increased if you moisten the brushes with saliva.

• Avoid using eyeliner on the inside or ‘wet’ area of your eyelids. It can block the glands there and lead to styes and dry eyes.

• Put your contact lenses in before you put your make-up on. Contact lens wearers know how important it is to keep their contact lenses clean to avoid infection but then risk compromising this with old make-up. If you are a contact lens wearer put your lenses in before you put your make-up on – not only will this will make it easier for you to see what you are doing but it will also mean you are less likely to get make-up underneath your lenses.

• Wash eye make-up brushes regularly. Make up brushes pick up dirt, grease, oil and bacteria from the skin and are then transferred onto your products. To help keep your eyes in good health and your products clean and safe, wash your brushes regularly in warm, soapy water.

• Visit an optometrist regularly. Optometrists are professionally trained to test sight, prescribe glasses and contact lenses and examine the health of the eye. Visit www.lookafteryoureyes.org for more information on eye health.

2010 Olympic Fashion – Parade of Nations

So, here are a few of the countries whose outfits I like. They’re creative and accessible.

Canada’s outfits – True North Strong and Free!

Official gear for Canada.

I really like these outfits worn by Estonia. They’re clean and bold and something you would want to wear all season.

Finland’s outfits were pretty cool too. The pattern on the jacket is really fun and fresh.

Georgia. I had to put them in here out of respect for fallen athlete, Nodar Kumaritashvili, RIP. Their outfits were nice too; a clean, streamlined look.

I really like how Germany gave the guys blue vests and the women pink ones. This was a neat variation to differentiate the two!

Great Britain had nice outfits too. Anyone could easily wear these.

Nice to see Ireland with some bright colors in their outfits.

Classic outfits here for the Swiss. Nice look.

Not their outfits a the Parade of Nations, but these looks for team USA are really nice.

So there you have it! Some of the recent looks from the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics!

Trend Watch – Denim

So the fashion powers that be have deemed that denim on denim is coming back in full force! I’ve always been a fan of this look, done right of course. I love how put together people can look when they pull a mostly denim outfit off. I’m talking a nice pair of jeans with a sleek white shirt (I usually picture it collared, button-down) topped off with a fun and fitted denim coat of a similar or slightly different colored denim. Classic look.

I’m also a big fan of the cropped jeans look with a nice pair of heels. I happen to know that men dig this look as well. When a woman pairs a nice pair of fitted jeans that hug her curves just right and finishes the look off with some nice heels, it is the epitome of casual sexy. This can obviously be paired with the denim jacket too.

Here are some nice looks.

Grammy Fashion

I love awards season. The shows are great to watch for the dresses. You know that’s the main reason we all watch them! So, here are some of who I think are the best dressed ladies of the night. I’m not going to be one of those negative people that trashes outfits. Everyone has their thing and I’m just not going to be mean. Not yet anyway, and hopefully for the foreseeable future. Lol.

A lot of people have been knocking this dress, but I think Keri Hilson looks stunning in it.

Love this one too! Rihanna looks so classy and classic in this Elie Saab Haute Couture gown.

A short dress like this one by Romona Keveza is not normally what you would see at the Grammys but this one on Lea Michele is great!

It’s just not fair how good Heidi Klum looks in this mini soon after having baby 4. Gotta give her props though!

Nicole Kidman plays it safe but chic with a classic black dress from Prada.

I’m not usually a fan of Miley Cyrus’ but she looks great in this Hervé Léger by Max Azria mini.

Colbie Caillat’s custom made Badgley Mischka is sexy and classy. Lovin it.

Seriously. Carrie Underwood looks amazing in this beautiful dress by Georges Chakra.

Well, those are my faves from the night. Let me know what you think!
